Speed Humps Coming Soon to Gulfport Neighborhood

Gulfport and St. Pete residents could see new speed humps installed as soon as May, if the next steps prove people really want the traffic calming devices.

Steve and Jane Neal are five-year residents on the St. Petersburg side of 7th Ave S. In that time, they've asked St. Pete and Gulfport, who oversees the other side of the street, to do something about speeders in their neighborhood.  "It's a huge problem," Steve Neal said. "It's just not safe." After a long process, residents on 7th Ave S. may see permanent speed humps as early as May, but only if the joint traffic calming plan, which has been stalled since 2009, can pass over another hump. A majority of the Neals' 78 neighbors must approve of the plan to install three speed humps on 7th Ave S. between 58th Street and 64th Street South. Ballots will be mailed on Wednesday, April 10. Are people speeding in your neighborhood? The City has adopted a traffic calming program to help.

Neighbors on 7th Ave S. have spent years telling city leaders about excessive speeding on their block. Carolyn Huffer told Patch, in a previous story, she routinely sees drivers accelerate up to 40 and 50 mph between 58th St. S. and 64th St. S. Huffer along with her neighbors have appeared in front of council and during the past few months, they've voiced their concerns again and again, hoping officials would do something about the constant speeders. As a result of residents' concerns, the city has adopted a "Traffic Calming Program" that provides several steps for officials and residents to determine if anything can be done to slow drivers. City staff are currently developing an application packet that will be available on the city's …

Great ideal!!! I'm sure a few people on my block will be starting one..We have people trying to avoid the crossing guard on 15th Ave and 52nd and they speed up 16th Ave..I have watched some people not even stop at the stop signs at all...I'm afraid someone is going to get hit..   more ›
