Pinellas County Toys for Tots desperately needs about 130,000 toys for children this year. Here's where you can donate in Gulfport.
Gulfport business owner Michelle Kotewa has been collecting unwrapped toys for the Toys for Tots program for years and says this is the least amount of toys she's ever received in her donation box. "This is really bad," she said. Kotewa, owner of Liberty Tax Service, even ran out to the store and bought toys for the drive. "I've collected about $200 worth of toys, but it's not enough," she said. And when Kotewa heard on several news outlets that donations are extremely low, she started contacting fellow business owners, friends and Gulfport Patch on Friday to get the word out. The Gulfport Police Department is collecting unwrapped toys for Gulfport families.
For 21 years, Gulfport Police Department employees have sponsored a program called “Operation Santa.” Employees collect and deliver toys, gift cards and other donations to families right here in Gulfport. You can help by dropping off a new unwrapped toy, gift card or monetary donations at the police department until Saturday, Dec. 22. Organizers currently have 41 families (110 kids) on the list, but typically reach approximately 100 families before Christmas. Any help that you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
