Sweetbay Shelves Empty, as South St. Pete Store Prepares to Close
Political leaders and the landlord of the Midtown Sweetbay urge the store owner to reconsider, but so far the company has not responded.
Walk through the Sweetbay grocery store at 22nd Street and 18th Avenue South. There is row after row of empty shelves, where once there was food. And abundance of food. Produce is nearly gone, as are the meats. The deli is empty. There is no fresh milk. And, there appears to be no plans by Sweetbay to restockshelves. The store is quickly going out of business. On Jan. 16, Sweetbay announced it would close three "underperforming" St. Petersburg stores by mid-February, part of a consolidation of stores across Florida. But the store's demise may come more quickly than that, as inventory is not replaced. I think they are a poorly managed company! High prices, limited inventory and unfriendly staff has been my experience shopping at their locations. I don't feel it is the employees fault, management sets the tone for any store. Sure another company will gladly take over, hope it is not walmart although.   more ›
