Patch Minute: Sand Sculpture Competition

Watch sand sculptures come to life this weekend at Treasure Island, the sand sculpture capital of Florida! Watch our video to hear more about the competition.

Welcome to this week's Patch Minute! Treasure Island The Sanding Ovations Masters Cup is going on now through Sunday, Nov. 18. Stop by the Bilmar Beach Resort on Treasure Island and watch the best in the business create art out of sand. The invitational competition brings internationally renowned sand artists to our beautiful beaches! At the end of the event, the sculptures will be judged and the top four sculptures and a “people’s choice” sculpture will be awarded over $12,000. The event will be going on all weekend and all day beach parking will be available for $10. Officials say the best time to stop by is Saturday and Sunday. Patriotic Sand Sculptures Welcome RNC Delegates

World Champion Sand Sculptors are working around the clock to create patriotic pieces for the 2012 Republican National Convention.

TREASURE ISLAND - While a handful of resorts along the Pinellas County beaches are putting finishing touches on signs, paint and even landscaping, one Treasure Island resort is sculpting their first impressions in the sand. "We just wanted to welcome the delegates and everyone with the RNC with a true Florida style and so we used sand, which is the best thing we have going on our beaches," Clyde Smith, Bilmar Beach Resort General Manager said. The Bilmar Beach Resort commissioned World Champion Sand Sculptors Dan Doubleday and Meredith Corson to create two patriotic sculptures for the RNC.
