Hurricane Recipes: What to Eat and How to Cook without Power

While hurricane season may be heating up, we offer ideas for cooking up a storm when your options are limited and the power is out.

Wednesday marks the beginning of what could be a long hurricane season. The trick for Floridians is planning ahead. Now is the time to gather a few spices and place them into air tight containers. I find that small snack-size Ziploc bags are easy to pack, identify and use. I have sacks for: Recently, I’ve been stowing tubes of lemongrass and curry, which are easy to use when camping, or roughing it after a storm. I store packets of dressing, relish and mayo for camping or food prep when the power is out. Lately, I have a can or two of lite coconut milk on hand and find that shredded coconut adds texture and taste to meals too. Packets of olive oil are easily stowed. Hurricane Season 2011: What's in a Home Disaster Kit?

Experts predict an active six-month season. Read along as we provide tips for home safety, how to prepare a disaster and first aid kit and provide resources for you and your family. It's all part of the Patch commitment to keep you informed and safe.

Experts at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration say the 2011 hurricane season will be busier than average. As the six-month season launches, Patch is collating information to arm readers living along Florida’s west coast, for what may be a stormy time. The Atlantic hurricane season begins on June 1st and ends on November 30th. NOAA’s Hurricane Center predicts a range of 12 - 18 named storms (winds of 39 mph or higher). Six to 10 of those could become hurricanes (winds of 75 mph or higher), while somewhere between three to six may become major hurricanes (Category 3, 4 or 5 - meaning winds of 111 m.p.h. or higher).
