Gulfport Police helped collect unused prescription drugs as part of the semi-annual Operation Medicine Cabinet event on Saturday.
Since Operation Medicine Cabinet began in May 2009, officers across Pinellas County have collected nearly 13,000 pounds of medications including the collection from this past Saturday. On April 27, officials across the county collected 1,545.5 pounds. The event is held twice a year to encourage people to safely discard unused or expired prescription medications. It is a multi-agency effort aimed at addressing the problem of prescription drug abuse and keeping a clean environment, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office. Gulfport Police helped collect unused medications during the 8th Operation Medicine Cabinet in Pinellas County.
The 8th Operation Medicine Cabinet collected a total of 863.83 pounds of prescription medications. Deputies say this was the second highest amount of medication collected during a take-back event. (On August 27, 2011 the event collected 1038.1 pounds.) Overall, the Pinellas County OMC take-back events and drop-off containers have collected 9,529.71 pounds since the program began in May 2009. (This does not include the drop-off container weights for the month of September 2012.) The four hour event was held at 9 locations throughout the county and included the participation of 8 law enforcement agencies in all. The Gulfport Police Department collected 8 pounds of unused prescriptions during the 7th annual Operation Medicine Cabinet in Pinellas County.
Fourteen participating law enforcement agencies collected 758.18 pounds of prescription medications during the annual Operation Medicine Cabinet. The Gulfport Police Department accepted medications at the Walgreens on Gulfport Blvd. S. from 10 - 2 p.m. In four hours they collected 8 pounds of pills. On April 28, Pinellas County law enforcement will be collecting unused and unwanted medications in fourteen locations countywide, safely and with no questions asked.
Do you have unused or expired prescriptions in your medicine chest? The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office can help you get rid of them safely. On April 28, the seventh "Operation Medicine Cabinet" (OMC) kicks off in Pinellas County. The PCSO, with LiveFree! Pinellas County Sheriff's Department announces a total of over 1000 pounds of unwanted medications collected in Saturday's event.
Sunday morning, the Pinellas County Sheriff's office announced "Operation Medicine Cabinet" collected more than one thousand pounds of unwanted and unused medications. Officials called the amount an "all-time record" for the program, which was held for sixth time on Saturday. The Pinellas County Strategic Diversion Task Force sponsored Operation Medicine Cabinet as part of the second annual Florida Statewide "Drug Take Back Event" and in combination with "Project Drug Drop" of the Narcotic and Dangerous Drugs Information System (NADDIS), a part of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.
