Celebrate World Book Night Tonight in the Reading Garden

Everyone is invited to celebrate the 2nd Annual World Book Night event at the Gulfport Public Library tonight at 7:15 p.m.

Guests will help "light the night" tonight in the newly constructed Library Reading Garden! The event will be a celebration of life and lanterns in the library's new outdoor space. Everyone is invited to celebrate the Circle of Friends of the Gulfport Library's 2nd Annual World Book Night tonight at 7:15 p.m. This year, officials are inviting people to enjoy the new garden. Officials have spent the past few months laying the foundation, constructing the fence and placing Tom Pitzen's beautiful mosaics in place. Recently, officials planted several flowers and plants for the big event. Gulfport Library Improvements Coming Soon

The Gulfport Public Library has been awarded a $180,000 grant to help pay for renovations.

Expect to see rennovations at the Gulfport Public Library this year. Gulfport City Counilors unanimously approved a resolution accepting the grant Tuesday night. The library will receive $180,000 through the Pinellas County Library Cooperative for upgrades to the restrooms, electrical system and reading areas throughout the building. According to the City Manager's memo in the council agenda, the last time the library was rennovated was in 1994, nearly 20 years ago. "(It) is in need of updating spaces to better serve the changing nature of library services," the memo states. The Gulfport Public Library currently has 6,605 resident patrons, or 54.94 percent of the city's population. According to the City Manager's memo, the total project …

Library Reading Garden Breaking Ground

Crews are turning dirt and placing the groundwork for a 1500 square foot Reading Garden at the Gulfport Public Library. Special thanks to Phyllis Plotnick for sharing photos of the progress.

Special thanks to Phyllis Plotnick with the Circle of Friends of the Gulfport Public Library for sharing these photos of the construction of the Reading Garden! About the Reading Garden: The plan is to create a 1500 square foot Reading Garden west of the Gulfport Public Library's atrium. The garden will be a place for outside reading, studying, writing and meditation. It will also serve as a spot for poetry and book readings as well as social gatherings and celebrations. Library Reading Garden Blooming Soon!

Gulfport City Leaders planted the first "seed" in the new community reading garden at the library.

Imagine picking out a book at the Gulfport Public Library and walking out into a garden full of flowers, local art displays, benches and memorial bricks. Within two years, that dream could be a reality if the community comes together with fundraising efforts and planning. The Gulfport City Council planted the first "seed" in the community garden by approving the use of $25,000 of Library specific Special Revenue Funds to be used for breaking ground on the garden. During Tuesday night's Regular Council Meeting, Phyllis Plotnick and other members of the Circle of Friends of the Gulfport Library asked the council to dedicate enough money to start the project.
