Gulfport police took part in the yearly run by helping carry the torch more than 4 miles along the route.
Special Olympics Florida has a yearly ritual of routing a path for law enforcement officers and supporters to run. In light of the upcoming summer competition, everyone, from chiefs to cadets, is encouraged to take part in the supportive act. This year's path started at St. Pete Police headquarters in downtown St. Petersburg. The torch, also know as the Flame of Hope, was lit just moments before the first leg of the run began. The first crew completed a four mile course that ended at New Heights Elementary school. Youths from the school cheered and rallied for the group as they passed. On April 28, the seventh "Operation Medicine Cabinet" (OMC) kicks off in Pinellas County. The PCSO, with LiveFree! Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition of Pinellas County will be collecting medications for disposal. The purpose of OMC is to teach and raise awareness of the problem of prescription drug abuse. The public is invited to stop by any one of the locations on Saturday, April 28 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and drop off prescription medications with no questions asked. Gulfport Police Explorers Post 995 is asking for donations of old and unwanted electronics, as a way to raise funds to attend the June Florida Explorers competition.
A unique recycling program turns unwanted electronics into much-needed cash, at the same time helping local teens interested in law enforcement careers. Gulfport Police Explorers Post 995 is now working with FundingFactory Recycling. The aim of the program is to collect used or discarded electronic gadgets from around the community. Members send the old items to FundingFactory in exchange for new technology, recreation products or cash.
