Goodbye, Gulfport on the Rocks

The popular neighborhood bar has been sold, and the owner, Sherrye Doucette, is throwing one last 'hoorah' on Super Bowl Sunday.

With a view of Boca Ciega Bay and a courtyard for year-round parties in Florida, Gulfport on the Rocks has become the neighborhood bar for patrons near and far. When Sherrye Doucette spotted it in 2002, she knew it would be the perfect local neighborhood sports bar. "This was a dream to have my own place," she said. Originally from Massachusetts, Doucette spent six months searching for a business investment when she found the bar in a magazine just one week before heading home. Doucette went back up north, negotiated the sale and a few months after that, moved to Gulfport and opened up her bar. "This had everything I was looking for," she said. Drop off Sandy Relief Donations in Gulfport

Gulfport On The Rocks is accepting donations for victims of Hurricane Sandy in New Jersey.

You can help Hurricane Sandy victims in New Jersey right here in Gulfport. Local business, Gulfport On The Rocks, is accepting donations to be sent to Ocean, Atlantic and Monmouth Counties in New Jersey. Gulfport On The Rocks is helping a fellow business in St. Petersburg with their efforts to help those who lost everything. D'Cajun Blues Roadhouse, 3090 34th St N. in St. Petersburg, is holding a fundraiser from 1 - 7 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 18. When owners at Gulfport On The Rocks heard of this, they offered to help gather donations. If you drop off donations by Saturday night, they will make it in the shipment to the Fire & Rescue Departments in New Jersey. D'Cajun Blues will pick up the boxes on Sunday, Nov. 18. 5 Things to Know in Gulfport: Special Magistrate, Acoustic Thursday, Salsa Lessons

The City of Gulfport's second Special Magistrate Hearing is today at 9:30 a.m. at Gulfport City Hall. Also, check out how to register to vote and com out for live acoustic music in Gulfport in today's "5 Things."

Special Magistrate Hearing: Special Master and Attorney James D. Thaler, Jr. will hold the city's second Special Magistrate Hearing regarding code enforcement and nuisance abatement cases today at 9:30 a.m. at Gulfport City Hall. The case to be addressed, as per the agenda online, is with a property owner regarding City Code 22-40.2 - Residentially zoned property being used as a kennel for an animal rescue purpose. According to the agenda, at least 27 animals were in the house. The hearing is open to the public. During the first Special Magistrate hearing in July, the business owner of Urgent Tree Service told Thaler he was going to move out of Gulfport and stated that it was too much hassel for him to stay in the city. Gulfport On The Rocks: Sports Bar by Day, Music Venue by Night

A veteran to the historic waterfront, Gulfport on the Rocks has proved its longevity as a staple in the community.

As the 10th anniversary of Gulfport On The Rocks approaches, owner Sherrye Doucette is happy to still be a crucial piece of the city puzzle.  Doucette says that she has been in the hospitality industry "forever"– since she was 14 years old. Gulfport on the Rocks is Doucette's first venture as a bar owner.  Growing up in a small town in Massachusetts, Doucette says that Gulfport is somewhat like home. "It's got that small town charm, but yet still it's conveniently located- you're within an hour of everything," said Doucette.  Ten years ago, Doucette set out to find a property in Florida that she could eventually call her own.
