Gulfport City Council

Hotel at Gulfport Marina?

What do you think about adding a hotel at the Gulfport Marina?

Gulfport City Council Member Christine Brown came prepared at Tuesday night's workshop. Brown not only suggested "big ideas" like adding a hotel and lighthouse restaurant at the Gulfport Marina, she brought props to help everyone visualize the plans. “I don’t want to change the character of our city, but we need this if we’re going to enhance the marina,” Brown said as she placed empty boxes in order.  Brown placed small boxes that represented the marina, BCYC, Gulfport Yacht Club and Coast Guard Building and then added a much larger box right in between the BCYC and Gulfport Yacht Club. That box represented a hotel. "These people don’t have to move for us to fit a hotel there, it’s a boutique hotel," she said. Brown envisions a two-story…

Concept of a 'Boutique Hotel' is good but NOT by the city of Gulfport - why would we as a municipal gov't go into the hotel business - STOP!!! This is a project for private enterprise - someone with the expertise - NOT us. Where in our city charter does it say that this is a function of city gov't - STOP. Float the idea to the hotel community - lease the land - give tax incentives - takes bids …   more ›

Marina Plans Include Larger Ship Store, New Facilities

Improvements slated for the Gulfport Marina next year include a larger ship store, new building and facilities.

Plans for a new building adjacent to the current ship store call for two levels with new bathroom facilities, a dayroom and laundry facilities for live-aboards at the Gulfport Municipal Marina. During Thursday's City Council workshop, City Manager Jim O'Reilly presented the list of capitol improvement plans to city councilors. Councilors will use O'Reilly's recommendations along with their own suggestions to help sculpt the operations budget for next fiscal year, which begins on October 1. Thursday night, they had their first look at the recommended capitol improvement program projects, which includes spending more than $800,000 on marina enhancements. Marina improvements listed include: Total = $880,000 Thursday was a first look at …

Are we going to be the only marina with live-aboard imps? Are the imps housebroken? Can they be trained to do tasks on the boat? has anyone thought five years down the road as to whether or not we are going to have an imp over-population problem?   more ›

Marina Should Expand Ship Store, Restrooms, Boaters Say

Gulfport residents want to see more restrooms, a larger ship store and plans for a multi-use building at the Gulfport Municipal Marina.

Dozens of Gulfport residents and area boaters came together Thursday at the Marina Master Planning charrette at Gulfport City Hall. Harbormaster Denis Fran and city officials called for the planning session to get a better idea of what boaters and residents want to see at the Gulfport Municipal Marina in the next 10 to 20 years. From an increase in amenities to allowing liveaboards, the open forum lead to several suggestions that Harbormaster Denis Fran and the Community Development Officer Fred Metcalf will bring forward to city council. Below are a few of the ideas shared at the charrette. More Amenities: Al Davis said the Gulfport Municipal Marina has a lot of potential due to its location in the bay and location from the Gulf of Mexico…

For the past 30 years, the Gulfport Municipal Marina has been welcoming visitors from Tampa Bay and beyond. Harbormaster Denis Fran has been doing the same; including helping the marina grow over the years. Now, Fran says the city needs to move forward with marina improvements to help lure boaters to Gulfport and keep up with current trends. Sunday Sunset: Marina in the Mirror

We want to see your photos! We know we live in paradise and part of that is enjoying a beautiful sunset everyday. We want you to send in your sunset photos from around the area and every Sunday, we'll share it on Gulfport Patch.

Welcome to your Sunday Sunset, a weekly photo feature that reminds us to take a moment and appreciate what it means to live in Gulfport. Patch reader and local business owner Tony Althaus sent in these photos taken at the Gulfport Municipal Marina about two weeks ago. Tony's favorite photo of the bunch is the blue photo of the Marina. The water is so clam it looks like a mirror image of the Marina. Thanks so much for sharing Tony! If you would like to submit a photo for our next "Sunday Sunset", email it to the editor at cherlene.willis@patch.com.

Sunday Sunset: Shades of Purple

We want to see your photos! We know we live in paradise and part of that is enjoying a beautiful sunset everyday. We want you to send in your sunset photos from around the area and every Sunday, we'll share it on Gulfport Patch.

Welcome to your Sunday Sunset, a weekly photo feature that reminds us to take a moment and appreciate what it means to live in Gulfport. Patch reader and local business owner Tony Althaus sent in five amazing photos taken at the Gulfport Municipal Marina in May. We asked Tony which photo of this bunch is his favorite and he picked the scenic view looking out into the bay. It's the featured photo in this gallery and it shows shades of pink, purple and yellow in the distance. "I blew this one up a bit and had it printed on a metallic paper that shimmers like a pearl essence painted car," Althaus replied.  Thanks so much for sharing Tony! If you would like to submit a photo for our next "Sunday Sunset", email it to the editor at cherlene.…

Welcome to your Sunday Sunset, a weekly photo feature that reminds us to take a moment and appreciate what it means to live in Gulfport. Patch reader and local business owner Tony Althaus sent in five amazing photos taken at the Gulfport Municipal Marina. The featured photo with the birds sitting on the house is my personal favorite. The editing makes the photo look like a painting. "You should check that house out sometime. It is amazing how many birds fill the tree next to it as well as cover the house," Tony Althaus wrote to Patch. We asked Tony which photo of this bunch is his favorite and he picked the scenic view looking out into the bay. It's the second photo in this gallery and it shows shades of pink, purple and yellow in the …

Hurricane Season 2011: Resources, Checklists and Breaking News

Hurricane Season 2011: Protecting Your Vessel

Planning ahead to safeguard and secure your boat may save you time, money and worry, after a storm. Read along as we offer tips and tactics for protecting your vessel. Why not provide some of your own?

Taking steps to protect your boat from storms and hurricanes can help lessen damage from violent storms. I spoke with Harbormaster Denis Frain with the Gulfport Marina. “Preparation is very important,” he says.  During hurricanes, boats can sink and many end up stranded on land. Experts advise owners to check policies for recovery costs. You may also want to know if personal belongings are covered. You can remove your boat from the water, or choose to tie it up at a marina. Most experts however, discourage boat owners from leaving boats on lifts or on storage racks as they can topple over. Frain says it’s critical to check your lines and ensure they aren’t frayed and can take a pounding in high winds. Learning how to tie lines can also …
