'Green Saturday' Events Coming to Gulfport

Learn all about planting fruit trees, urban gardens, a community food table and more at "Green Saturday" on Nov. 24 in Gulfport.

Mark your calendars for "Green Saturday" on Nov. 24th in Gulfport. Guests will learn about sustainable growth and growing one's own food. "Green Saturday" is also intended to help spur a movement to plant food-producing fruit and nut trees on public land, including parks and churches. Events include a fruit and nut tree sale, a workshop on planting and caring for Florida fruit trees, a community food table, and a showing of the film "Grow!"   All events will be held in or near the Catherine Hickman Theater, 5501 27th Ave. South in Gulfport. Gulfport Goes Green at Alternative Holiday Market

Peaceful Plate hosted its first ever 'Green Saturday' and has ambitious plans for the future.

After holding an event called “Growing Greener” earlier this year, Crea Romanelli (owner of Peaceful Plate) discovered Gulfport’s potential to become a green city. “At first we thought ‘we need to do this every month,’ ” Romanelli remembers. “Then we decided that quarterly might be a better option.” Between “Growing Greener” back in June and “Green Saturday” now, Romanelli took the time to host mini-seminars on gardening and sustainability. She teaches the basics on how to raise crops and incorporates small changes that can make a big difference. “One of the most powerful stands you can take is to sit down, be quiet and listen to your heart,” Romanelli said. “We can come together and do this.” Saturday’s holiday market drew 35 vendors, …
