5 Things to Know in Gulfport: Car Burglaries, Veterans Dance, Fresh Market

Gulfport Police are reminding people to lock vehicles after three were burglarized in Gulfport this past weekend. That and more in "5 Things to Know Today."

Burglaries: The Gulfport Police Department is warning citizens about three vehicle burglaries that happened over the weekend. According to their Facebook post, all three cars were unlocked and had valuables in plain view. Officials are asking people to remove or conceal valuables and lock cars. Veterans Dance Benefit: Tickets are on sale now for the Veteran's Day Dance and Benefit on Sunday, November 11 with live band Steel Horse, at the Gulfport Casino Ballroom. The dance is the premier event for the "Heroes Weekend" and will help raise money for the Veterans Law Institute and Paws for Patriots program. Jill Kalber Turns Tragedy into Triumph with a Therapeutic Livelihood

The economy’s downward spiral was a turning point for Jill Kalber. For her, a therapeutic hobby turned into a full time job.

Stroll along Beach Boulevard on a Tuesday morning and you'll likely pass by Jill Kalber's table and tent featuring one-of-a-kind scarves during the Gulfport Fresh Market. Behind the set up and vibrantly colored fabrics is a story of a woman who perfected a craft after falling victim to the ailing economy. Three years ago, Jill Kalber was laid off from the Tampa Bay Times. She played a vital management role in the company, overseeing a team of 16. The lay off was hard for Kalber, but she trekked on. Prior to her career at the newspaper, she worked on a cruise ship. With her time at sea, Kalber was able to travel the world. One destination from her travels still sticks out to Kalber. Every Tuesday downtown Gulfport lures people and vendors from all over Tampa Bay. After six years of bringing quality, unique and fresh food, art and more, officials say they're setting records!

Stroll down Beach Boulevard on a Tuesday morning and you'll hear a bustling downtown. Not really the sound of cars, streetlights and anything else associated with a busy city. What you'll hear is live music, vendors and customers chatting, people visitng and people buying everything from fresh produce to home decor. The Gulfport Fresh Market celebrated six years of success in February and now officials say they're reached another milestone, more than 3,000 people are coming to the market each Tuesday.
