Photos: Gulfport Salutes 'Old Glory'

Gulfport gathered to salute "Old Glory" and properly retire several flags that could not longer be hung during a Flag Retirement Ceremony on Flag Day.

Boca Ciega Bay provided a picturesque view for the annual City of Gulfport Flag Day Ceremony on Thursday, June 14. Friends, families and city leaders gathered for a Retirement of the Flag Ceremony conducted by the American Legion Post 125. 80-year-old Victor Helou performed the Star Spangled Banner and God Bless America during the ceremony. Flag Day commemorates the adoption of the United States Flag. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson established June 14 as Flag Day but it wasn't until 1949 when Congress established National Flag Day that the day become as recognized as it is today.

5 Things to Know in Gulfport: Celebrate Flag Day at Veterans Park

Everyone is invited to a Flag Day Celebration at Veterans Park today at 10 a.m. That and much more in "5 Things to Know Today."

Flag Day: Mark your calendars for the City of Gulfport's Flag Day Celebration on Thursday, June 14 at 10 a.m. at Veterans Park on the corner of 54th St. S. and Shore Blvd. S. The event is free and open to the public. For more information call (727) 893-1118. Free Lunch for Children: The Gulfport Recreation Center, 5730 Shore Blvd. S., is one of several sites offering free meals for children 18 and under. Meals will be served between June 12 and August 7 with lunch between 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. and a snack between 4 - 5 p.m. For more information call 893-1068.
