It's not Fourth of July without fireworks, but officials urge people to leave it up to the professionals.
"The Fourth of July means fireworks," says James Marenkovic, Gulfport's Fire Chief. "But given the potential injuries and the extreme risk during this drought, go watch the professionals," he said. Except for fireworks classified as sparklers, it is illegal to purchase fireworks in the state of Florida. Two loopholes in the law allow purchase. They can be sold to those who need to scare away birds on agricultural lands and to clear a railroad. When you purchase fireworks, you actually sign a paper stating you won't set them off in Florida, Marenkovic said. That's why you won't find them for sale anywhere within Gulfport city limits, he said. He also discussed the dangers inherent in using even those fireworks classified as sparklers. …

Gulfport City leaders appoint Teen Council members, Fireworks on the 4th of July, Swing Night and more in "5 Things to Know Today."
New Members: During Tuesday night's meeting the Gulfport City Council appointed three new members of the Gulfport Teen Council. Here are the new members that will begin after current terms expire in August 2012: Lauren Harker (member), Dylan Bierworth (alternate member) and Andrea Hoyland (alternate member.) Fireworks: The annual 4th of July City of Gulfport Celebration will include fireworks, as always. The Gulfport City Council voted 5-0 on Tuesday night to approve a contract for a $20,000 fireworks display to be fired from Williams Pier on the 4th of July.
