FDOT Puts Focus on Pedestrian, Bicyclist Safety

According to FDOT, its goal is to reduce pedestrian fatalities 20 percent by 2015.

Throughout 2012, 28 pedestrians and nine bicyclists were killed in Pinellas County. Thursday, in Pinellas County, the Florida Department of Transportation kicked off a safety and education campaign to increase public awareness about pedestrian safety.   As part of Secretary Ananth Prasad's ongoing initiative to reduce bicycle and pedestrian injuries and fatalities, the message "Alert Today, Alive Tomorrow...Safety Doesn't Happen By Accident" will be presented via television, social media, transit advertising, and local education and enforcement activities, a news release said. Eastbound Traffic Shifts to New Bayway Bridge

The inside eastbound toll lane will be closed for approximately three weeks while roadway work is completed for the anticipated traffic shift for westbound traffic a few weeks later.

The Florida Department of Transportation announced over the weekend that eastbound traffic will be shifted beginning Monday to the new span of the Bayway Bridge.  According to FDOT, the traffic switch will take place between 7 p.m. and midnight. Officials say motorists should expect delays during that time.   The inside eastbound toll lane will be closed for approximately three weeks while roadway work is completed for the anticipated traffic shift for westbound traffic a few weeks later, according to FDOT. The traffic shift will affect drivers accessing the Pinellas Bayway (SR 682) from Bahia Del Mar Blvd S. or Sun Blvd S. Skyway Bridge Lane Closures

There will be night lane closures on the Sunshine Skyway Bridge starting Sunday night.

Starting Sunday night, officials will closed the southbound right lane on the Sunshine Skyway Bridge between 7:30 p.m. and 6 a.m. for contruction. The lane will be closed from near the top of the bridge to the end of the bridge during the overnight hours Sunday through Thursday, Jan. 27 - 31. DUI Checkpoints Planned During the Holidays

Florida state troopers plan a special enforcement to crack down on impaired motorists who may be out celebrating the holidays and drive while intoxicated.

Think again before you celebrate the holidays with another glass of eggnog or other alcoholic drink. Florida state troopers launch "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" from Dec. 12-Jan. 1, with the aim to stop impaired drivers who pose a risk on the road. DUI checkpoints and heaver enforcement are planned. "Officers will be aggressively looking for impaired drivers and will arrest anyone caught driving impaired," according to a press release. "If you are caught drinking and driving impaired, you will be arrested. No warnings. No excuses," said Lora Hollingsworth, FDOT Chief Safety Officer.
