Free Cancer Screenings Saturday in Gulfport

Stop by Walgreens in Gulfport on Saturday and receive free oral cancer screenings, skin cancer screenings, and prostate screenings. There will also be free food and drinks at the event.

For the past five years free cancer screenings in Gulfport could have potentially saved dozens of lives. Last year alone, organizer David Hastings says they provided free oral cancer screenings to 200 people and referred 16 for further medical attention. “This is what it’s all about. It’s getting people to have an early detection," Hastings said. A Cancer Survivor Hastings, an oral cancer survivor, started the screenings to help people detect cancer before it's too late. He has been cancer free for about eight years and says he owes his life to his wife and her persistence in getting him to seek medical help. Free Cancer Screenings Provide Education and Awareness in Gulfport

The third annual free oral cancer screening and newly added PSA blood test lured dozens of people to Gulfport on Saturday.

For the third year in a row, the Walgreen's parking lot served as a mini health fair for those willing to come out. The free event featured oral cancer screenings in 2010 and 2011 and added a simple PSA blood test this year for men. 125 people received oral cancer screenings. Of that group, 10 received referrals to seek additional medical attention. 38 men took part in the free PSA blood draw, which officials said was fantastic. Free Cancer Screening Event Expands in Gulfport

The third annual Free Oral Cancer Screening event will also provide free PSA screenings on Saturday, April 28 in the Walgreens parking lot.

"Potentially, we've saved 15 people's lives in this little effort," Organizer David Hastings said. Gulfport resident David Hastings started the free oral cancer screenings in 2010 in order to help people detect cancer before it's too late. In the past two years, he estimates between 150 to 200 people have come out each year. In that time, he says, dentists referred 15 people for additional medical help. Hastings is a cancer survivor and Senior Patient Advocate of the Oral Cancer Foundation. Gulfport Patch caught up with Vice Mayor David Hastings Tuesday night. Watch our video to hear how Hastings and Campaign Manager Gina Burke feel about the outcome and moving forward in the City.

According to the unofficial results from the Pinellas County Supervisor of Elections Office, Dan Leitdke received a total of 938 votes and Incumbent David Hastings received 929 votes in Tuesday night's Municipal Elections for the Councilmember Ward 1 race. There will be a machine recount Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the Pinellas County Supervisor of Elections Office in Largo, 13001 Starkey Rd.. The public is welcome to attend. Gulfport Patch will be there and have the latest from the recount.

Video: Dan Liedtke Ready to 'Hit the Ground Running'

According to the unofficial results from the Pinellas County Supervisor of Elections, Dan Liedtke pulled ahead in the Ward 1 City Council race by nine votes, with 938 total votes to Incumbent David Hastings' 929 votes.

According to the unofficial results from the Pinellas County Supervisor of Elections, Dan Liedtke received 938 votes in the March 13 Municipal Elections. Incumbent David Hastings recieved 929, nine short of Liedtke's votes. Recount on Wednesday The County Canvassing Board will meet on Wednesday at 1 p.m. for a machine recount for the City of Gulfport Councilmember Ward 1 race. According to councilmember Barbara Banno the public is allowed to attent the recount at the Supervisor of Elections Office in Largo. Candidates Take Part in Last Forum Before Election Day

The Gulfport Democratic Club sponsored the third and final candidate forum this political season. Three of the four candidates attended and answered questions ranging from red light cameras to city improvements and more.

Ward 3 Candidates Jennifer Salmon and James Perry and Ward 1 Candidate Dan Liedtke shared their views on dispatch, city improvements, PACE, red light cameras and more during the Gulfport Democratic Club "Meet the Candidates Forum."
