Patch Minute: 'Field of Screams' Sneak Peek

Are you ready for the "Field of Screams?" You don't have to wait until Halloween to get spooked! Check out this week's Patch Minute for a preview of several weekend events.

In St. Petersburg: Teens and adults are invited to participate in the Field of Screams on Friday, October 26 through Sunday, October 28 and again on Halloween. TASCO presents the 7th annual Field of Screams featuring “Quarantine,” from 7 p.m. to midnight at Boyd Hill Environmental Studies Area, 2900 31st Street South. A special encore night will be featured on Wednesday, October 31, 7 p.m. to midnight. Each night, “Quarantine” challenges participants to navigate through the dark woods, escape the village, break out of the decontamination tent, escape the safe house and flee to safety. Snake Excites Library Visitors

The Gulfport Public Library and Boyd Hill Nature Preserve combined forces to teach children about wildlife with an up close and personal experience.

There weren't any bookworms spotted at the Gulfport Public Library on Wednesday, however a slithery visitor did catch readers’ attentions. The Circle of Friends of the Gulfport Public Library invited some reptilian visitors to meet library guests face to face as part of a summer learning program. Children were able to meet and greet a lizard, a turtle and a snake from Boyd Hill Nature Preserve. Ken Payette, a Boyd Hill volunteer, was on hand to educate the children about animals like alligators as well. Payette has more than 10 years of experience with Boyd Hill and had plenty of information and stories to tell the children. The Circle of Friend organization is a 501(c)(3) group that aims to grow the library's services through community …

Prescribed Burn Planned at Boyd Hill Today

The burn is scheduled to start at noon and be complete by the end of the day. Smoke from the burn is likely to disperse over Boyd Hill Nature Preserve and Lake Maggiore.

Officials at Boyd Hill Nature Preserve, 1101 Country Club Way S. in St. Petersburg, are planning a prescribed today beginning at noon, weather permitting. The Florida Division of Forestry, St. Petersburg Fire & Rescue and Boyd Hill Nature Preserve staff supervises and conducts prescribed burns.  The burn is expected to be complete by the end of the day, the news release said. Smoke from the burn is likely to disperse over Boyd Hill Nature Preserve and Lake Maggiore. The Preserve’s trails will be closed all day, but the picnic area and education center will be open.
