The Florida Department of Transportation announced over the weekend that eastbound traffic will be shifted beginning Monday to the new span of the Bayway Bridge. According to FDOT, the traffic switch will take place between 7 p.m. and midnight. Officials say motorists should expect delays during that time. The inside eastbound toll lane will be closed for approximately three weeks while roadway work is completed for the anticipated traffic shift for westbound traffic a few weeks later, according to FDOT. If you're planning to use the Pinellas Bayway bridge this week, you may need to find an alternate route. The bascule bridge is closing again to allow for concrete deliveries. The city of St. Pete Beach is advising motorists that the eastbound travel lanes will be closed Tuesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Vehicles are being redirected to Corey Causeway. Emergency vehicles will be allowed to travel through work zones.

If you're heading out today and plan on going east on the Bayway Bridge, be ready to change your plans. All eastbound traffic will be detoured away from the Bayway Bridge today, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The detour is due to the continuing construction on the Bayway Bridge. The detour will also be in effect on Wednesday and Thursday, with the bridge closed from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.

Starting today, there will be lane closures on Bayway Bridge between St. Petersburg and St. Pete Beach to allow for concrete to be delivered for the bridge reconstruction.

The Florida Department of Transportation will host an open house from 5-7 tonight to show plans for the Bayway Bridge replacement project. The bridge is located along the Pinellas Bayway (S.R. 682) between Gulf Boulevard (S.R. 699) and west of S.R. 679/Sun Boulevard. The open house is at the Magnuson Hotel Marina Cove, 6800 Sunshine Skyway Lane South, St. Petersburg. The Pinellas Bayway Bridge Replacement project will include replacing the existing two lane bascule bridge with a four lane fixed high-level bridge. Project information and display boards will be available and staff will be on-hand to answer questions. I agree with Bob, why can't we leave a "fishing" pier....seems like a waste of time & money to dissect this pier without making use of the existing exits on each side. The idea of using dynamite to blow up the pilings seems harsh and unnatural. Just thinking out loud.   more ›
