Gulfport Police: Buckle Up or Beware

Police will be on the lookout for drivers who aren't wearing their seat belts as part of the national Click It or Ticket campaign.

Buckle up or beware, Gulfport! The Gulfport Police Department will be on the lookout for drivers who aren't wearing their seat belts as part of the national Click It or Ticket campaign around the clock from May 20 through June 2. "Wearing your seat belt costs you nothing, but not wearing it will," said Sgt. Thomas Woodman, police spokesperson, in a media release. "So unless you want to risk a ticket, or worse, your life, please remember to buckle up!" Gulfport Hardware Owner Faces New Charges

David Cretella was arrested and charged with arson in October last year. While awaiting trial, Cretellas was recently arrested on drug charges.

The owner of Gulfport Hardware, David Cretella, already awaiting trial for a felony arson charge following the burning of his shop in October 2012, has been arrested again, this time on drug charges, according to police. Cretella, 64, of Seminole, had already posted $10,000 bail for arson in the second degree following the fire at his shop, at 5006 Gulfport Blvd. S. Cretella entered a "not guilty" plea and waived his right to a speedy trial, according to Gulfport Police. He has a pre-trial hearing set on June 11 at 8:30 a.m. But in an unrelated incident, Cretella was arrested by Pinellas County Sheriff's deputies Friday, May 10, and charged with possession of methadone, possession of a controlled substance, possession of diazepam and …

Police Relocation Idea Shot Down by Gulfport Councilors

The majority of city leaders do not believe the city should borrow $3 million dollars to move the Gulfport Police Station to 49th St. What do you think?

Immediately upon taking office, Councilor Michael Fridovich suggested moving the Gulfport Police Department to 49th Street. Frodivich believes more police presence will help tackle crime and the perception of crime along the border corridor.  During the most recent council workshop, on Thursday, May 9, Fridovich also expanded on how the move could lure more businesses to the area. "It's totally underutilized," Fridovich said. He added that he's spoken to businesses owners and residents in that area who agree with him. Despite his efforts and suggestion to borrow $3 million for the project, the remaining councilors disagreed with taking out a loan of that amount. Gulfport Jail Bookings Report: May 8 - 12

The following people were arrested by Gulfport Police between May 8 and 12, 2013. The information is provided by the Gulfport Police Department and the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office.

May 8 January Jill Jones, 35, of Gulfport, was arrested by Gulfport Police on the charges of resisting arrest without violence, battery/domestic, both misdemeanors. Jones also has an existing charge out of Palm Beach for VOP Grand Theft, a felony. Jones posted $5,000 bail for two of the three charges. May 10 Albert Kimball Eades, 49, of Gulfport, was arrested by Gulfport Police on the charges of LVE CRASH INV DMG SPTC, a misdemeanor and Aggravated Assault with a motor vehicle, a felony. Eades posted $5,250 bail for both charges. Victor Allen Miller, 26, of Gulfport, was arrested by Gulfport Police on the charges of petit theft, criminal mischief, burglary; possession of tools, burglary; dwelling (unoccupied). A 66-year-old Sarasota man faces a drug charge, after police allege that he ran a large-scale retail marijuana operation that involved receiving weekly deliveries of high-grade cannabis at his home that he repackaged into smaller quantities and sold at a profit. Sarasota Police Chief Bernadette DiPino held a press conference Monday, May 6, to announce the arrest of Anthony Snead, in connection to a six-month undercover operation. He was charged with possession of  cannabis with intent to sell. Detectives estimate that Snead paid approximately $780,000 to $1 million per year for the cannabis, which he then resold for more money. A man tried to sell 25 brass vases that had been stolen from plots at a Bradenton cemetery, authorities said …

Coast Guard Rescues Two People Near Skyway

Two people were rescued from Coast Guard crewmembers approximately one mile east of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge on their 19-foot boat.

The U.S. Coast Guard rescue dtwo people a mile east of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge May 9 after their boat began taking on water near the center span of the Skyway bridge.  According to the Coast Guard, members of Sea Tow contacted Coast Guard Sector St. Petersburg watchstanders at 4:47 p.m. Thursday, and reported the people aboard were in need of assistance. A 25-foot Response Boat — Small crew from Coast Guard Station St. Petersburg arrived on scene and was able to control the flooding, a news release said. They placed the boat in tow and transported them to Demens Landing Marina in St. Petersburg. Man, 20, Charged With Having Sex With Teen

Gulfport Police arrested a man after they said he had sex with a girl between the ages of 12 and 15.

A 20-year-old St. Petersburg man is charged with having sex with a girl between the ages of 12 and 15, according to Gulfport Police. Philip Charles Corson, 20, of St. Petersburg, was arrested on a charge of lewd and lascivious battery, a felony, on Wednesday, May 3, according to a Pinellas County Sheriff's Office bookings report. According to the arrest report, Corson told authorities he had consensual sex at the victim's home on April 17. The girl's parents were not home, the report states. On April 30, investigators held a controlled phone call between Corson and the victim. According to the report, Corson admitted to having sex with the victim. Corson is being held in the Pinellas County Jail awaiting trial. Bail is set at $20,000. …

A man is charged with beating a dog to death during a burglary at a Sarasota automotive shop, authorities said Monday. The 61-year-old suspect was seen on surveillance video beating the dog with a tire iron at John's Automotive, 1815 Snug Harbor Pl., the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office reports. The business owner had reported the 4-year-old mastiff, "Ashton," missing on Sunday morning, officials said. Later that day, the owner reviewed surveillance video and saw the beating by a man he later identified as 52-year-old Kevin Koscielniak, an employee who was asked to leave a day earlier after causing a disturbance. Investigators say Koscielniak climbed over a barbed wire fence, killed the dog, and wrapped it in a blanket. The man cut the …

Stolen Bicycle Recovered on Craigslist, Police Say

Gulfport Police arrested a man accused of stealing a bicycle and trying to sell it on Craigslist. According to reports, the man was also arrested on drug charges.

A 19-year-old Gulfport man was arrested April 23 after a woman found her stolen bicycle listed for sale on Craigslist and contacted authorities, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff's report. According to the arrest report, the victim told police that Tyler Marquis went into her carport during the night of April 22-23 and cut the cable lock on her $429 bike. The woman later spotted her bicycle for sale on Craigslist for $80 and arranged to meet Marquis to buy the bike, according to reports. She told police that she matched the serial number and determined it was her bike. After Marquis was arrested for the charges of grand theft, dealing in stolen property by use of Internet, burglary and grand theft, officers searched his home. During…
