Larger Venue Needed for Next Sheriff Debate, Organizers Say

The next Pinellas County Sheriff candidate debate, set for July 17, will feature all candidates who meet the June 8 qualifying deadline.

Organizers are searching for a venue large enough to hold around 500 people for an upcoming Pinellas County Sheriff's candidate forum. That's double the number of attendants at the first National Armed Services & Law Enforcement Memorial Museum-sponsored forum in April. The upcoming forum, scheduled for July 17, will feature all candidates meeting the June 8 qualifying deadline.  The first NASLEMM-sponsored forum drew an audience that included ex-sheriff Jim Coats, who resigned from his seat in November to care for his ailing wife, and many city and county officials. Eckerd College Student Busted In Online Child Sex Sting

The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office arrested 31 men in the online child predator sting, including a lieutenant commander of the U.S. Coast Guard JAG Miami unit.

An Eckerd College student is among the suspects facing child predator charges in a large sting operated by the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office. Kevin Williams, 21, of 25 Seton Road, Irvine, Calif., who is listed as a student at Eckerd College in Pinellas County, was arrested after allegedly SMS messaging and sending e-mails to arrange a sexual encounter with an undercover officer claiming to be a 14-year-old girl. Williams' arrest was part of sting called Operation Intercept, which involved detectives posing online as minors and posting ads in chat rooms, message boards, Facebook and other places online. Wednesday, May 2 James Earl Kister, 23, of St. Petersburg, was arrested by Gulfport Police on the charge of DUI and Reckless Driving with Serious Body Injury, both felonies. Kister posted $10,000 bail. Sunday, May 6 Tara Haynal, 33, of Gulfport, was arrested by Gulfport Police on the charge of aggrevated battery on a person more than 65 years of age, a felony domestic. Haynal posted $10,000 bail. Matthew Joseph Reed, 19, of Oldsmar, was arrested by Gulfport Police on the charge of DUI, a misdemeanor and Unauthorized possesion of a driver's license or ID card, a felony. Teacher's Aide Arrested for Sex Acts With Student

Authorities allege that the teacher's aide conducted a 7-month relationship with a 16-year-old student at Hamilton Disston School in Gulfport.

A woman who worked as a teacher's aide was arrested and charged with unlawful sexual activity after carrying on a 7-month relationship with a 16-year-old student at Hamilton Disston School in Gulfport, athorities say. Rumors surfaced about a relationship between Artia Patrice Davis, 30, of Clearwater and a disabled student at the school, prompting an investigation by Pinellas County Schools and Child Protection Investigations, according to Clearwater Police. Amid the inquiry, Davis resigned from her job as a teacher's aide in March, officials said. On Monday, as part of the investigation, officers went to Davis' Highland Avenue apartment and found the victim in her bed. Davis was arrested and charged with unlawful sexual activity with a …

Dogs Seized in Hoarding Case Getting Help in Gulfport

Some of the 260 animals being pulled from a animal hoarding case in Sarasota County are getting help in Gulfport. Volunteers say they need your help to find good homes.

VIP Rescue, based out of Clearwater, has rescued nearly two dozen dogs from an animal hoarding case in Venice. For the last two days, Sarasota County Animal Services have pulled out dog after dog in chicken coops and have weighed, examined and catalogued them, said Wendy Rose, spokeswoman for the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office. On Friday Terri Ensign, with VIP Rescue, transported 13 dogs from Sarasota County. "The vet bills are going to be outrageous. Every dog will have a bill. They have ear infections and eye infections," Ensign said. Ensign says the next step is getting the animals cleaned up and with foster homes. Mary O'Malley with Reef Dog Gifts & Grooming is helping with that. On Thursday, she groomed six dogs free of charge to …

Gulfport Police Collects Unused Medications

The Gulfport Police Department collected 8 pounds of unused prescriptions during the 7th annual Operation Medicine Cabinet in Pinellas County.

Fourteen participating law enforcement agencies collected 758.18 pounds of prescription medications during the annual Operation Medicine Cabinet. The Gulfport Police Department accepted medications at the Walgreens on Gulfport Blvd. S. from 10 - 2 p.m. In four hours they collected 8 pounds of pills. Operation Medicine Cabinet events to date (two in 2009; two in 2010; and two in 2011); along with OMC's permanent drop-off containers at the Sheriff's Administration Building and North District Station have collected over 6,000 pounds of medications. The event is designed to educate the public and raise awareness about the problem of prescription drugs abuse. The problem has reached epidemic proportions, with prescription drugs as the number …

Drowning at Fort De Soto Park

A 56-year-old Clearwater woman apparently drowned in shallow water near the North Beach picnic area at Fort De Soto Park on Sunday.

A Clearwater woman who was pulled unconscious from shallow water off Fort De Soto Park today has died at a St. Petersburg hospital. Just after 11 a.m. on Sunday, a lifeguard spotted 56-year-old Michelle Dresser of Clearwater floating face down, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office. The lifeguard performed CPR on the scene, and the woman was taken to Bayfront Medical Center, where she later died. According to deputies, the woman was at North Beach with friends and was seen floating and paddling in shallow water. At this point, deputies say there is no evidence of foul play. The Medical Examiner will conduct an autopsy.

Deputy Dies in Motorcycle Crash

Deputy Jason Shoulta died Friday after an accident in Pasco County.

The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office lost one of its own Friday in a motorcycle accident: Deputy Jason Shoulta. The 43-year-old officer died from injuries suffered in a crash in Pasco County  Friday afternoon. In a message to members of the Sheriff's Office, Sheriff Robert Gualtieri said: "Our thoughts and prayers are with Jason's family and friends. There is no sense that can be made of such a tragedy and no words that can make this easier on anyone." According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash occurred near the intersection of Perrine Ranch Road and County Road 77 (Seven Springs Road). Shoulta, who was off-duty at the time of the accident, was operating his 2010 Harley Davidson Street Glider southbound on County Road 77 …
