Quiche Du Jour is Delicious at Stella's

From fried green tomatoes to smoked salmon, Stella's serves up breakfast plates made to please. Welcome to our first "Local Flavor" article, complete with a description to jump-start your appetite.

With all the local restaurants and made-to-order specialties in and near Gulfport, we know you have an important decision to make! Where to have breakfast, lunch or dinner right here in town. Each week, we'll fill you in on something delicious! If you love eggs, veggies and cheese, you'll love one of Stella's quiche de jour options on their menu. There's always more than one option, but on this day I ordered the vegetable and goat cheese dish with a side of hash browns. Lifetime of Neglect Leaves Dog in Hopeless Health

Several ladies went above and beyond to make one Shar Pei named Rosie's final passage one of comfort and love.

Rosie, a Bearcoat Shar Pei believed to be 5 years old, was in dire shape when she was dropped off at Animal Control. Her owners decided they no longer wanted her. A woman named Judy Labadie circulated Rosie's picture, and got the attention of Mary Schacherbaur of New York and Betsy Meek.  Judy immediately took her to a vet in Altamonte Springs, where she was told that Rosie was heartworm positive, had a respiratory infection, had a a skin condition caused by a flea allergy, was in renal failure and was blind and deaf. Her condition was more like that of a 10-year-old dog, the vet said. The vet thought that Rosie was in stage three of heartworm disease and was going to write her off. But all of these wonderful ladies had a different idea. …

Causeway Dog Beach Lets Dogs Be Themselves

Off the leash, Grayson's prey drive kicked in, and Kaiah revealed a mothering instinct I could never teach her.

I am so excited! My friends told me about the Belleair Causeway, where the dogs get to run on the beach without being on a leash. So I loaded up Kaiah, Grayson, towels, fresh water and a bowl, and we headed out. When we got there, Kaiah was excited because she saw the water. She loves to swim! Grayson has only been to the beach a couple times, and he had to stay on a leash. He had not actually gone swimming yet, so I was hoping.  When we got there, it was great! The dogs got to run and play with each other and other dogs in the water, and a little on the beach area. Kaiah ran and waited for me to throw a ball into the water for her to swim out and fetch. Grayson kept looking around like he was in awe.  The dogs were playing and running …

Hillsborough Moving Toward No-Kill Animal Shelter

Hillsborough County is taking steps to drastically reduce euthanasia of shelter animals. Let's continue this movement in Pinellas!

Hillsborough County took a huge step forward in the animal community a couple of weeks ago by moving toward making its animal shelter a no-kill zone. Hillsborough County Animal Services has been trying to get its euthanasia number down. It has gone down from 30,000 in 2005 to 14,000 last year. What a great feat! Now, the county is trying for even fewer. Now, there are always going to be some exceptions to the rule, such as very sick dogs that cannot be saved, but those things cannot be helped.  Animal Services employees are being redirected in how to maintain operations while saving most animals from euthanasia. Some of the steps that they are working on are: This is a huge thing, and I hope that it will come to Pinellas County. A group …

Shelly, as I understand it, Pinellas county has an active Anti-Trap/ Neuter/ Release group (primarily composed of concerned bird people) opposed to feral cat colonies being supported in any way. I did not attend the county meeting in March, but the reporting I read indicated that TNR would not be adopted in Pinellas County. Without an active TNR program, cat euthanasia in Pinellas will continue …   more ›
