'Satan and Adam' to Perform in Gulfport

Gulfport resident and blues legend will perform with his legendary musical duo here in town Friday night.

Gulfport music lovers will get a rare chance to see famed blues duo Satan and Adam perform here in town this week.

The street music legends — otherwise known as Sterling Magee and Adam Gussow — recently reunited after years apart. They'll take the stage at Peninsula Inn & Spa at 7 p.m. Friday, July 5, for a special performance to raise funds for a reunion tour, according to Peninsula owner Jim Kingzett.

The unconventional duo — Magee is a Southern-born black bluesman and more than 20 years older than the white, Ivy league-educated Gussow — gained fame in the late 1980s and early '90s for their Harlem performances.

The musical partnership came apart as Magee suffered health problems, eventually turning up at the Boca Ciega Nursing Center in Gulfport. A film crew recently visited the 76-year-old Magee to capture footage for a "Satan and Adam" documentary now in production.

Satan and Adam performed together in May at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival following a 22-year absence there.

This will be the last First Friday at the Peninsula for a while as the inn is closing its restaurant and bar for the next few months for renovation and improvements.  The inn will remain open, according to its co-owner Jim Kingzett in a recent Patch interview.
