International Film Lovers!

International Film Lovers, Film Reviews for the Eckerd College International Film Series.

Melancholia
This was an epic in cinematography, a crescendo of intensity that abruptly ended leaving me in a sustained state of awe and wonder.
Directed by Lars von Trier (English, 136m, 2011) A large family gathers for a wedding celebration, as a massive planet threatens to collide with the Earth. Lars von Trier's latest film is possibly his most accessible, and likely his most beautifully shot film, but manages to deal deftly with issues both personal and cosmic.

Once Upon a Time in Anatolia
It was the filming I loved on this one, authentic and rich in a somewhat bleak and endless landscape, very human.
Directed by Nuri Bilge Ceylan (Turkish with English subtitles, 150m, 2011) An atmospheric and meditative murder mystery unravels as police search for a missing body in the Turkish countryside.

The Skin I Live In
A must see. Provocative, uninhibited, and tangled. Very good and very warped gender based Psychosexual Drama with Antonio Banderas. I Loved this one. I can't say anything more without giving it away but WOW!)
Directed by Pedro Almodovar (Spanish with English subtitles, 117m, 2011) A brilliant and obsessed plastic surgeon designs the perfect synthetic skin, and tests it on the mysterious woman he holds captive in his home.

These are films I saw at the Eckerd College International Film Series. It is a free showing most Friday nights at 7PM. 6:45 is an ideal arrival time. There's a short commentary prior to showing and some wonderful discussions after, over snick-snacks at any one of our favorite Gulfport restaurants. I have included a link to the college's event calendar for those who might wish to check it out. I look forward to it every week.

Please note: this event is not well suited to children. The content is not sensored for them. The films can often be slow and to a child uninteresting. Many of the films are subtitled.

I would like to offer a giant, "Thank you!" to Eckerd College for making this event available to us. I am extremely grateful! What a treat!
