Florida Job Search Journal: The Virtual Application Process

Got an email: Sorry to inform you... an illustrator job. Applied for 6 more positions.

So I need to find work because my business is too young yet to support me and I thought I should keep a log about what the process is like, step by step, in today's economy and high-tech world.

Job search journal:

Day 1. I applied for 12 jobs on line. Applied for 18 more before going to bed.

Day 2. Worked on a couple of client books then job searched again. I applied for 17 more. We're not talking about exec jobs. I applied for banquet server, delivery driver, office assistant, designer, illustrator, etc...

Day 3. Got a response. Sorry to inform you... Applied for 11 more jobs. I guess I should explain that these are all online resume and application submissions. I'm new-age and a bit of a geek. This is how it's done these days in my experience.

Day 4. Got an email: Sorry to inform you... an illustrator job. Applied for 6 more positions. Talked to my friend. She said, "this is Florida, man, you can't just apply on line. You have to get out there and look them in the face."

Day 5. Got up, showered and went to apply at the hotels around the pier in St. Pete. Got an iPhone alert while I was driving down the road. JOB ALERT! The Vinoy, Banquet Server Needed. I turned left, pulled into the Vinoy, parked the scooter, jumped off and ran in. "Hi, I just got an alert that you were hiring a banquet server."

"That's right."

"Great. I'm here for the job."

"You have to apply on line for that."
