Was That an Alligator Swimming at Fort DeSoto Beach?

A small alligator was found in the surf off Fort DeSoto Beach.

Lifeguards pulled an unlikely beach-goer from the surf at Fort DeSoto Beach Friday – an alligator that was skimming the surface.

Under four feet in length, lifeguards at first thought that the 'gator was a log rolling in the waves.

The wayward alligator eventually was carried out of the saltwater and placed into the care of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

Wildlife experts still aren't sure where the alligator came from – or why it was at the beach.

According to a story in the Tampa Bay Times, FWC spokesman Gary Morse said that alligators will sometimes swim in saltwater in their journey to another body of freshwater. It's uncertain where this little guy was heading.
