Video: Charge Electric Cars in Gulfport

Progress Energy unveiled Gulfport's first electric charging station.

Gulfport is home to one of 50 electric charging stations installed by Progress Energy in the state of Florida.

Progress Energy Senior Account Executive Michele Cavallo along with Gulfport Mayor Mike Yakes and City Council members opened the new station for drivers during the 12th Annual Geckofest celebration.

The City of Gulfport reports that a Nissan Leaf was the first car to charge up near the Gulfport Casino Ballroom on Shore Boulevard. Progress Energy installed the station at no cost to the city. The company will provide electricity at no cost for one year, after that, the city will pay for the charges, according to the City of Gulfport.

The station is a Level 2, 240 volt site and can fully charge a vehicle in about 6 to 8 hours; with only 3 hours needed to recharge.
