Gulfport Yacht Club's Lease Agreement Approved

The new short-term lease with the Gulfport Yacht Club benefits the club and the city, according to Gulfport City Manager Jim O'Reilly.

Gulfport City leaders have agreed to a reduced lease agreement for the Gulfport Yacht Club during Tuesday night's council meeting.

The Gulfport Yacht Club will lease the land for $19,500 annually for a period of two years - less than the present amount of $22,500. Officials with the club say changes in the economy and silting in a portion of the 12 we slips has resulted in an annual loss of $6,000 to the club.

"GYC is no longer able to lease the majority of the wet slips at our club because there is a lack of sufficient water for boats to move in and out of the slips," Gordon Isco, Commodore of GYC, wrote in a memo to City Manager Jim O'Reilly.

O'Reilly added Tuesday night that during low tide, none of the 12 wet slips are accessible and due to the silt issue, four cannot be used at all.

The club approached the city about renegotiating prior to the end of their current lease in August 2014.

The club has an option to renew the lease for the 2015/2016 year. The short term lease allow flexibility as the city begins changes and upgrades to the marina.

According to the memo, the lease agreement will include a provision acknowledging the necessary compliance with the provisions provided for within the City of GUlfport's Code of Ordinances Chapter 26 - CIVIL RIGHTS (City's Human Rights Ordinance) in the conduct of its activities on the premises.
