City to Hire New Police Officer, Building Inspector, Receptionist

If approved, next year's budget would include hiring full and part-time positions in several city departments.

The financial forecast in Gulfport may be improving. City Manager Jim O'Reilly is proposing hiring five full time positions and two part time positions in the next fiscal year.

"We’re starting to replace positions that were held vacant by attrition," O'Reilly said following his proposed budget presentation Tuesday night.

The following positions are included in his proposed FY2013/2014 budget, which can be seen in its entirety on the City of Gulfport's website.

  • One Police Officer
  • One Streets Department Employee
  • One Sanitation Department Employee
  • Two Building Department Employees ( One Building Inspector, One Permit Technician)
  • Part-time Gems Coordinator
  • Part-time City Hall Receptionist

O'Reilly says one indication the local economy may be looking up — property values are slated to increase.

“For the first time in five and a half years we’ve seen a positive uptick in property values,” O'Reilly said.

According to a new property value estimate by the Pinellas County Property Appraiser, property values in Gulfport are estimated to increase by .77 percent during the next fiscal year.
