Kamikaze Squirrels at the Dog Park

As I walked up, my friend said, "Shelly, it's a squirrel!!" I looked up and saw Grayson starting to take off, carrying the squirrel. I yelled at him to drop it.

Squirrels run through the dog park, tempting canines and defying fate.

There are 10-20 dogs, and these squirrels choose to run from one tree to the next – hopping, jumping, and worst of all, running on the ground.

They drive the dogs crazy. The dogs will stalk, chase, bark, and try their best to catch one. The squirrels at the dog park seem to enjoy antagonizing the dogs.

One day, all the dogs were running from tree to tree following the squirrels, which is nothing new. Kaiah and Grayson seemed to really have a prey drive all of a sudden to the point where they tried to climb the tree.

Kaiah was actually up in one!

I was just letting the dogs be themselves, running and chasing the squirrels, until I heard Grayson give a slight growl. I turned around, and he was lying on the ground and chewing on what I thought was a ball. I approached him to take the ball away because I won’t allow him to keep something if he is being protective of it.

As I walked up, my friend said, “Shelly, it’s a squirrel!!”  I looked up and saw Grayson starting to take off, carrying the squirrel. I yelled at him to drop it, which luckily, he did. Unfortunately for the squirrel, he did not make it.

There was no way I could pick this poor thing up, so my friend Julie did as I grabbed Grayson. When she did, my back was to her and she squealed a little, which made me scream at just the thought of it all. (Emotions were a little heightened)

I felt horrible, and it sure didn’t help when my friends at the dog park were saying “Squirrel killer,” as Grayson would walk by.

Now, they are just teasing and giving me a hard time, which I know.  Poor Grayson wouldn’t leave me along for about 20 minutes. I am not sure if he wanted praise or forgiveness, but either way, I still love him.

After all of this, the squirrels still run around the park as before.
