“There is no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing” is a saying we have in Sweden. Okay, I am spoiled, when I am talking about winter diving I generally speak about diving in the springs in Florida whom have the temperature of 72-73 F all year long. Despite the fact I am from a country that has the temperature of 42 F in the Baltic sea and 28 F in the air right now, snowing, I have through the years been so adjusted to the Florida weather that I consider 73 F cold water.

Diving in winter time I think it is better to have layers on the body, rather than buying a full 7 mm wetsuit. I might do that in the future, but so far I think my 3 mm full wetsuit with a hooded top, socks in my boots, and quite thick gloves are working very well. At least when we have a great sunny day waiting when coming up from the water. Some springs have picnic tables and a fire place where one can grill hot dogs. Devils Den has that.

Devils Den in Williston, Florida, about 2,5 hours’ drive north from Tampa Bay is one of North Americas most prehistoric places. From the state parks web site:

“The remains of many extinct animals from the Pleistocene Age (2 million – 10, 000 years ago) were discovered at Devils Den, including the bones of early man, dating back to 75,000 B.C. On cold winter mornings you can see steam, like smoke, rising from the caves chimney. Hence the early settler called the place Devils Den”.

This place is a special place to dive. I guess you can imagine that from my pictures. One can see the sky the whole time and I think that even most people with claustrophobia can enjoy this place. It really isn’t as scary as my pictures show and what the name says!
