South Pasadena Wants Longer Yellow Lights

Drivers paid out $2 million in red light traffic fines in 2012.

The South Pasadena City Commission has voted unanimously to ask state Transportation officials for longer yellow lights.

WTSP reports that drivers in this tiny city of .6 square miles paid $2 million in red light camera fines in 2012. The fines were related to traffic lights on Pasadena Avenue.

The commission is requesting the highest yellow light times allowed by law.

Federal studies show that yellow light durations should be based on the actual speeds drivers travel at on roads, rather than the posted speeds.

In addition, yellow lights should have longer times in areas with high populations of elderly drivers.
