5 Things to Know in Gulfport: Police Academy, PACE, Fresh Market

The Gulfport Police Department's citizen's police academy begins tonight. There is a city council workshop and regular meeting back to back tonight. That and more in "5 Things to Know Today."

Citizen's Police Academy: The Gulfport Police Department is hosting an 8-week citizen's academy that will include learning about traffic stops, crash investigations, problem oriented policing and more. I've applied and been accepted into the program and will begin the course tonight at 6 p.m. at the Gulfport Police Department.

PACE: The Gulfport City Council is holding a workshop tonight at 5 p.m. at Gulfport City Hall (before the regular meeting.) There will be no public session. Instead, there will be a complete presentation by Distric Management Services (DMS). DMS is applying to be a third party administrator for the City of Gulfport's PACE program. PACE is the Commercial Property Assessment Clean Energy Program. The ordinance passed with a 4-1 vote in 2011 but during a January meeting the council did not vote on the bid and contract by DMS. You can view and print the agenda from the City of Gulfport's website.

Regular Meeting: The Regular Gulfport City Council Meeting will begin following the workshop at Gulfport City Hall. Tonight's meeting includes a presentation by Gulfport CERT and appointment of new members to the Gulfport Teen Council. To view the agenda, click on this link to the City of Gulffport's website.

Gulfport Fresh Market: Come one, come all to the Gulfport Fresh Market today from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. in downtown Gulfport. You'll find everything from local honey to fresh flowers and hand-painted artwork.

Tuesday Forecast: We have a 20% chance of showers and thunderstorms. Otherwise, partly sunny with a high near 87. Expect a west, southwest wind between 9 and 18 mph, with gusts as high as 26 mph. I suggest a text for your academy, my new book, "Arrested Development: A Veteran Police Chief Sounds Off About Protest, Racism, Corruption and the Seven Steps Necessary to Improve Our Nation’s Police.”
