Join up and prepare to educate the public on environmental issues

Do you like showing people how to protect the environment and save money at the same time? The Pinellas County Extension’s Sustainable Floridians (SM) Program prepares citizens to educate the public on sustainable, green practices. The program is scheduled for Wednesdays from April 9 to May 14, 9 am to 1 pm at Weedon Island Preserve. You can reserve a seat by clicking here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/2014-sustainable-floridians-training-program-tickets-10298022663

The six-week course covers a different topic each week and includes books, materials, and some sustainable living devices. Among the topics covered are how to save energy, local foods, land use, water conservation, and community leadership.

Graduates have the option to become volunteers with Pinellas County and can participate in community outreach, 4-H, writing blogs and articles, research, and other volunteer activities. In addition, volunteers may become eligible for such county benefits as a free pass to Ft. De Soto after completing a certain number of volunteer hours per year and free classes at the Extension.

As a member of the Pinellas County Sustainable Floridians (SM) pilot class in 2011, I enjoyed meeting the other people who also participated in the program, who were often already involved in such interesting activities as producing food locally and promoting sustainable industries. I also learned a great deal about other programs at the Extension too through various speakers who presented to our group.

In the years since then, I’ve volunteered with the program and found that the outreach activities at such events as the Home Show are fun. People are always happy to meet and speak with Extension volunteers. Volunteers also have numerous opportunities to improve their knowledge of various topics related to Pinellas County Extension activities so I am always learning something new.
