Fudge Boys Feature Homemade Goodies at Gulfport Fresh Market

Have you met the "fudgenista" of the Gulfport Tuesday Fresh Market?

The fudge cone at the Gulfport Tuesday Fresh Market is one of the "must have" treats of the day. For just $1, you can sample homemade fresh fudge like chocolate, chocolate peanut butter, chocolate raspberry and more.

The resident "fudgenista" Kevin Ritter has been making fudge for years, but didn't start selling it until a year and a half ago. Ritter started "Fudge Boys" and quickly became a regular at the Tuesday Fresh Markets and Art Walks in Gulfport.

"I love making fudge," Ritter said.

Ritter started the new business with John Rymer. Both are artists and have been for decades. However, Ritter needed a break and took the lead on the new business venture.

"Making fudge is very scientific. It's science, but it's also creative," he said.

Before launching the small business, Ritter spent years making fudge, creating recipes and inventing new flavors. "It was trial and error," he said.

Stop by the Fudge Boys booth and you'll find chocolate, vanilla, chocolate pecan, chocolate peanut butter, chocolate raspberry, chewy prailine, dark chocolate salted caramel and more.

Ritter also sets up at local markets in St. Pete Beach, Carrollwood and Wesley Chapel on a weekly basis. To meet all of the demands, he makes 18 pounds at a time - cooking and baking three times a week.

While loyal customers can pick up fudge on a weekly basis, Ritter says his fudge has a long shelf life - making it easier for people to stock up. The fudge can last up to three months in your pantry or fridge and up to a year in the freezer.

Ritter also keeps his booth stocked with local saltwater taffy that he purchases from another vendor. It's a combination that's sure to satisfy any "sweet tooth" on market day.
