Each week Gulfport Patch will share photos of events, people and places in Gulfport.Members of the Boca Ciega Yacht Club welcomed friends, family and neighbors to their annual "Fun Day" event on Saturday, April 27. Dozens of guests recieved free sailboat rides and tours of Boca Ceiga Bay! The Boca Ciega Yacht Club is a place to socialize, sail and learn about sailing. It features adult and youth sailing schools, free use of club boats for members, local sailboat races, social events, weekend cruises and a Sea Scouts Program. A group of passionate book lovers decided it was time to share their love of reading by building an official "Little Free Library" right here in Gulfport. Gulfport's Little Free Library officially opened on April 3 at 2414 58th St. S. Zora De Bodisco and Bill Gorman, members of the Circle of Friends and supporters of the Gulfport Public Library, decided to build the small free library to make quality books easily accessible to everyone. About the Reading Garden: The plan is to create a 1500 square foot Reading Garden west of the Gulfport Public Library's atrium. The garden will be a place for outside reading, studying, writing and meditation. It will also serve as a spot for poetry and book readings as well as social gatherings and celebrations. Classic Chevy's, Ford's, Bentley's and more filled the Tangerine Greenway in Gulfport on Saturday. The Second Annual So Classic Car Show featured everything from a 1916 Ford Model T to a 1955 Bentley called "Her Mjstys." Danny and Pat Green, of Riverview, brought "Her Mjstys" to the show. Danny bought the 1955 White Bentley about two years ago from a museum. Since they, "Her Mjstys" has won about 75 awards. Danny says "Best in Show" is her most popular title. What a year! In the past 12 months we've cleaned up after major storms - Tropical Storm Debby, welcomed a new city council member, celebrated many firsts, including Aquamania, and many popular parties, including St. Paddy's Day at O'Maddy's. The ”Christmas Collecto-Rama…A Santa-Comes-to-the-South Holiday Antique Show” lured collectors and enthusiasts from Tampa Bay to Gulfport on Saturday. The indoor vintage holiday ornament and Christmas memorabilia show had a line out the door before they opened at 10 a.m. Check out photos from the event!
While the Gulfport Post Office has changed, slightly, over the years, the location has been the same - inside the Gulfport Beach Bazaar on Beach Boulevard in downtown Gulfport. The counters are original and the P.O. boxes are at least 10 years old. We gathered a few photos of the Community Post Office and created this gallery. This week, many residents have been in and out sharing their memories and appreciation for the long-standing office. The new owners circulated a petition to keep the Post Office in Gulfport. Dozens of people lined the streets of Gulfport and cheered for veterans, organizations and other participants in the second annual Veterans Day Parade in downtown Gulfport on Saturday. Army Lt. Col. Kathy Champion, an Afghanistan and Iraq War veteran and Gulfport native who received a service dog from the Paws for Patriots program was invited to be the grand marshal this year. Several local organizations like the American Legion Andy Anderson Post 125, Gulfport Area Chamber of Commerce and Veterans of South Pinellas County tossed beads and candy into the crowd. Dozens of puppies, dogs, moms and dads packed The Art Village Courtyard Wednesday night. Participants hoped to snag the titles for best Doggie Halloween Costumes during the annual party and contest. They wagged their tails, greeted guests with barks and licks and of course, they showed off their costumes. Some were homemade, others storebought and put together with care. The Gulfport Historical Museum hosted a fun-filled annual Birthday Bash celebration last weekend. The museum featured new exhibits including old books, family photos, old cameras and more. If you didn't stop by last weekend, you'll definitely want to swing by to see what's new. There are several new exhibits including: "You Don't Have to be Rich" "Gulfport's Naprapaths" Did you know in 1953, it cost about $110 a month to live in Gulfport. The annual Birthday Bash featured a raising of the flag by the American Legion Post 125, special performance of the "Star Spangled Banner" by Elizsbeth Brown Worthington and memorial dedication ceremony for Mary Atkinson, one of the founding members of the Gulfport Historical Society. The plaque is surrounded by three trees to represent the past, present and future, Lynne Brown said. The plaque reads, "Forever Volunteer."
