Since the 1970's the Gulfport Boomerangs have hit the fields for a friendly softball game three times a week.
Drive by Hoyt Field, and you're likely to see the energetic, fun softball team called the Gulfport Boomerangs. Members have called Hoyt Field home for about 40 years. The 55-plus league's members come and go, but the name and legacy remain in Gulfport. Recently, Gulfport Patch spent a morning with the players. Stop by Hoyt Field any Tuesday, Thursday or Saturday in Gulfport and you'll hear laughter, jokes and cheers during a friendly softball game on the field. Although school is out for the summer, these players don't rely on seasons to take a break for a ball game. The Gulfport Boomerangs is a senior softball team with participants 55 and up. The men have years of life experience, wisdom and tales to tell . . . of course, they leave it all off the field during each game and just have fun like the good ol' days.
