From Black Cat Fridays to Whisker Wisdom, Shelter-Cat Specials Abound in June

There are dozens of discounts and deals in June on adopting felines at local animal shelters in Tampa Bay and across the U.S.

Why? Every spring is kitten season, which means adoption specials are just around the corner, as local shelters begin to fill with homeless cats of all stripes, shades and sizes.

While we celebrate the glory that is feline, and the catitude that comes with it, we need to remember there are too many adoptable cats without homes. Here's what you can do to help locally.

1. Know a senior in need of a friend?  SPCA Tampa Bay has a Whisker Wisdom special in June that invites senior humans to find their purrfect matchup with a senior cat. People 55-plus can adopt a cat 5-plus for just $20.55. Fees include a pre-owned carrier. Enjoy one-stop shopping at the Homeward Bound Gift Shop: Take your feline friend home with a litter box, litter bag, scoop and a toy for just $15 more.

2. SPCA Tampa Bay celebrates Black Cat Fridays in June! Any adult cat (1 year and older) with any black markings goes home for just $25, which includes a pre-owned carrier. SPCA Tampa Bay is located in Largo at 9099 130th Avenue North. www.SPCATampaBay.org

3. For both cat owners and cat-owners-to-be there are workshops on feline care. This includes tips on how to trap ferals for humane spay-neuter and return to their environment. Check out your local rescue group or visit the SPCA Tampa Bay website.

4. Room in your heart, but not your home? Donate to your favorite feline caretaker or organization. Here are just a few: Friends of Strays, SPCA Tampa Bay, Pet Pal Animal Shelter.

Thanks so much, Nora, for reminding those of us who have "room in our hearts but not in our homes" about donating to organizations that care for felines! I love the Whisker Wisdom special too. Many residents at Brentwood Senior Living Community (where my parents and their cat, Savannah live) enjoy having their cats with them in assisted living luxury! Seniors and cats are a perfect match.

Thanks Lynda for sharing your personal connection and encouraging people to donate if they cannot adopt. Sounds like the house cats at Brentwood have it made :)
