Volunteers Needed to Clean up Clam Bayou, Downtown Gulfport
Tropical Debby's mess in Gulfport has inspired two cleanup events in Gulfport today and tomorrow. Volunteers are asked to stop by Clam Bayou this morning and then lend a hand on Saturday on Shore and Beach Boulevards.
Clam Bayou Cleanup: Friday, June 29 at 8 a.m.
Liz Poloney is helping organize a cleanup event today at Clam Bayou. Volunteers are asked to meet at 8 a.m. ready to pick up trash and debris that was washed into the bayou by Debby. You're asked to bring gloves and trash bags. It's probably wise to wear tennis shoes or other closed-toe shoes. For more information contact Poloney at (727) 366-2264 or email lizpoloney@me.com.
Downtown Gulfport Cleanup: Saturday, June 30, 9 a.m. - 1 p.m.
Sandy Duffy is organizing a community cleanup to help beautify downtown Gulfport just in time for the 4th of July Celebration. Volunteers can meet in front of the Industrial Arts Center at 9 a.m. on Saturday, June 30. The event is scheduled for 9 a.m. - 1 p.m., so you're encouraged to come when you can. The City of Gulfport will provide "pickers" and set up garbage cans at the corner of Beach & Shore Blvd. Please R.S.V.P. if you can by emailing Sandy Duffy at sdfree2b@yahoo.com or calling (727) 565-7522.
If you snap any photos at these events be sure to share them with Gulfport Patch by posting them on our Facebook page or emailing the Editor at Cherlene.Willis@patch.com.

We are new to the area and I have been wondering for a long time about what area ''Gulfport'' really is. I know the actual boundaries and all that, but it is obvious that many people go to Gulfport and do a large percentage of thier activities there (like us) that don't technically live here. I have always been surprised that more is not done in Patch articles that makes some of the surrounding area citizens feel more included in some of the Gulfport invitations for volunteer efforts...especially the litter clean up get togethers. Our home is technically in St Petersburg. I know this is probably silly to ask this..but are ''outside'' people welcome to chip in and help? Are residents of surrounding cities here entitled to use Gulfport facilities, such as thier library, The Recreation Center, The Casino activities, etc? We as so new here, we really don't know much yet..other than we love our new home. Being a newcomer, even though we are addresed in St Petersburg..we feel ''very much part of'' Gulfport, St Pete's Beach, Cleawater, Seminale, etc, etc...as well. I guess we could simply indulge in volunteer efforts for St Petersburg itself, but frankly..it's the other ciies we seem to go to more often. Is this a common delima I am bringing up? We have been here long enough now that we are ready to start volunteering...but don't want our presence to be out of place. It seems to me all the communities need as much help as they can get and we should all reach out to other cities.
