Video: How Do Red Light Cameras Work?

American Traffic Solutions, the company that runs Gulfport's three red light cameras, launched a "How it Works" video to show you how the system works.

In February 2011, three intersection safety cameras or red light cameras were installed in different locations in the city.

  • West Bound on Gulfport Blvd. S. & 58th St S.
  • South Bound on 49th St. & 15th Ave S.
  • East Bound on Gulfport Blvd. S. & 49th St. S.

During the first 30 days, the cameras snapped photos and those caught running red lights received warnings. As of March 21, 2011, the cameras went "live" and the warning period ended. Within the first 30 days of issuing tickets, nearly 640 citations were issued. Running the light will cost you a $158 for the ticket.

American Traffic Solutions operates the cameras and systems from Arizona. The pays $4,500 per month per camera.

"As the country's leader in road safety technology, ATS is committed to working to raise awareness and educate the public about how red-light safety cameras work," said James Tuton, ATS President and CEO.

According to the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety, red-light running is the leading cause of urban crashes.
