VIDEO: Big Bird 'Fights' Mitt Romney

Protesters staged a mock boxing match between Big Bird and candidate Mitt Romney, after the former Massachusetts governor pledged Wednesday to eliminate funding to PBS.

Before Gov. Mitt Romney took the outdoor stage in downtown St. Petersburg for a campaign rally Friday, Big Bird tried to upstage the GOP presidential candidate.

It was not the Big Bird of "Sesame Street" fame, but a costumed protester from the Florida Consumer Action Network and MoveOn.org.

The protest groups lampooned Romney and his pledge to cut PBS funding by staging a mock boxing match between Big Bird from "Sesame Street" and a caricature of the former Massachusetts governor.

At Wednesday's presidential debate, Romney told debate host Jim Lehrer that he intended to eliminate funding to PBS, the public network, where Lehrer hosts the "NewsHour."

The Associated Press reported:

Yes, Bird. During Wednesday's debate with President Barack Obama, Romney called for cutting federal funding to PBS, despite saying, "I love Big Bird." It renewed a long-running debate over subsidies to public broadcasting.

"I'm going to stop the subsidy to PBS," the former Massachusetts governor, a Republican, said during a deficit-cutting discussion. "I'm going to stop other things. I like PBS. I love Big Bird. I actually like you, too, Jim (Lehrer, PBS newsman and debate moderator). But I'm not going to ... keep on spending money on things to borrow money from China to pay for it."

Taxpayers do not need to fund NPR and PBS any longer. Years ago this funding was appropriate not in current times.

71M was the last amount I saw as the government subsidy to PBS... that's less than a number of wall street execs make in a year. Seems like we're making a big deal over a tiny amount of money for something that is actually... educational... for our children.

Seems like there's some more meaningful cuts that could be made.. outside of the fact that public broadcasting is a demon that Republicans have long wanted to slay.

Coming in at 1/100th of 1% of the budget (!!) is THIS where "Mitt" wants to direct focus of his budget balancing ?? With BILLIONS wasted on unneeded wars, defense waste, Halliburton and other contractor unaccountability, money spent so profligately that the budget office can't even figure out where HUNDREDS of billions of dollars were spent in Iraq? And "Mitt" is worried about Big Bird????

Romney and his GOP cohorts may like Big Bird, but they hate and fear the "elite liberal media" that gets airtime on PBS. He prefers that the public stay focused on "Say Yes to th Dress" and such like. John Lennon put it better than I ever could..."They keep you doors with religion, sex and TV.....

Cutting education and leg up programs for the children of the poor are the Christian values Romney and his ilk embrace! Disgusting! Is that the way to get people to take responsibility for themselves? To deny them opportunities for education?

Romney needs to keep his greedy, nasty little "Mitts" away from children's learning. A true disgrace.

Folks, you all have valid points. Whether its for financing wars, or public television or any number of the thousands of programs we pay for, we've got to face up to the fact that we are spending money like a drunken sailor and putting it on the next generation's credit card. Ok, maybe we keep Big Bird. As a fan & supporter of PBS I can tell you this: if you love it so much, are you willing to support it out of your own pocket?

I am willing to support PBS out of my own pocket. Are you willing to support two wars out of your own pocket? How about supporting the incredible amounts of tax loopholes for the rich ... willing to support that out of your own pocket?

I do like 10s of millions do. I am not part of the 47%, that Mitt spits on , I am part of taxpayers who pay a higher rate than Mitt does. Why won't Mitt show us his tax returns for 2005-2009, his accounts who I take at face value have said his "rate" was 13 or 14%, it can do no more damage, the only logical reason is that Mitt and Ann bought their way out of prison term with The IRS amnesty for tax cheats with Swiss accounts, created after the UBS whistle blower case.

Buckshot: Oh yes, let's take away our only source of genuine information; information that is not biased whatsoever. Let's just take all the money that we were giving to NPR and give it to Fox News! Sounds like a great idea...

The dynamic duo of Romney and Ryan would drive the entire economy into a nose dive as long as it benefits the richest Americans. They'll even destroy our beloved Big Bird and anything government-funded which stands in the way of making the rich richer. Income inequality is endangering the Middle Class and making paupers of us all who don’t have those millions upon millions of dollars. Read more about the role of Romney’s riches in this election and the power of his sacred undergarments at http://dregstudiosart.blogspot.com/2012/05/mitt-romneys-magic-mormon-underwear.html The working class of our country can’t AFFORD to allow this election to be bought and sold!

I always found the big bird annoying but that's personal opinion. I still wish people who have time to blog and complain would find time to educate themselves on the issues instead of relying on soundbites and headlines. If regular school board, county and city commission meetings, water board, etc were attended by citizens who are paying for them through their taxes, maybe the elected and appointed officials would pay more attention to US than the 'ahem' stakeholders they are being swayed by.
