Supporter: Obama Protects Women's Rights
St. Petersburg's Lara Jackson brought her 11-day-old daughter to the rally for President Barack Obama in Tampa Oct. 25.
Lara Jackson of St. Petersburg brought something special to the “America Forward!” rally for President Barack Obama: her 11-day-old daughter, Harper.
“I believe it’s important to protect women’s rights,” Jackson said of why she supports Obama. Then she pointed to her newborn: “And she believes it, too.”
Jackson said she was looking forward to hearing Obama speak.
“I’m hoping to hear what his plans are because I’m confident we’ll have him for the next four years,” she said.

Republicans want to force rape victims to carry a resulting pregnancy to term. And many people don't realize that rapists have parental rights, and can blackmail their victims into not pressing charges by threatening to fight for custody.

I don't remember that being in the Republican platform. There may be R's that espouse extreme views and D's too, but the GOP doesn't support a policy of rape victims being forced to carry a resulting pregnancy to term. A convicted rapist will lose parental rights. Prior to the rape conviction, attempting to Blackmail the victim is a crime that can be added to the rape charge, I would suggest most prosecutors would advise a victim of that.

Ruggle,
In the ideal world that may be true. But unfortunitely that is not the case. Too many people working to "reunit" families in our state department. I know of 2 cases were the rapist is being given parential rights after they were parolled after just a few years. But unfortunitely most cases are seen as a push through the system and get to the next number. Prosecutors are just trying to get through the numbers, instead of working for the victim.

You make a good point. Romney wants to take women back to the 1950s.
Why would ANY WOMAN vote for Romney?
He does not support the equal pay for equal work act (Lily Ledbetter Act) for women.

Romney favors the Blunt Amendment that would deny contraception coverage for women. http://bostonglobe.com/news/politics/2012/10/17/president-obama-tries-capitalize-women-issues-after-second-debate-with-mitt-romney/BYFJOuHtDdcaNeGIWVajcN/story.html
Romney favors a “personhood” constitutional amendment that would define “life” as beginning at contraception, and could make abortion illegal.

He falsely said at the second debate that he sought "binders of women" profiles to find women to hire as governor, but, in reality, he was made to use binders and pledge to use them.

Romney would be COMPLETELY WRONG for America’s women!
Obama's position on each of these issues is totally OPPOSITE of Romney and IS PRO-WOMEN.

Two of the most important points from Obama's speech this morning:
"...I don't think any politician in Washington, most of whom are male, should be making healthcare decisions for women..."
and
“When you elect a president, you’re counting on someone you can trust to fight for you, who you can trust to do what they say they’re going to do, who you can trust to make sure that when something unexpected happens he or she is going to be thinking about your family, your future...Trust matters!”

Ms. Jackson gives me hope that all of us who fought so hard for so long against the "will of God" men who would control women's health care decisions will be able to pass the torch of vigilance to young women who have never known a time when family planning and reproductive decisions were illegal.

rugglesjames: The law is clear 'in America, if a women wishes to stop the beating heart of her unborn child', she has the legal right to do that. No President (R or D)alone will be able to undo that. However, the issue before America, is can you use tax dollars to pay for the procedure and the Republicans say no. That's not a question of women's reproductive rights, it's about spending tax dollars on something a large part of the country finds objectionable. We spend tax dollars on war and there are pacifist taxpayers who, I'm certain, find that objectionable. However, raising funds for war or defense is an enumerated power of the government in the Constitution, there is no such provision for medical procedures. Your financial well being is not covered by the Constitution. The idea is that through a process of nurturing (family) and education (family & State) you will learn to prepare yourself for life and make good choices. When you make bad choices, you, not the taxpayers, should face the consequences. Abortion as birth control is a bad choice. Family planning used to be part "home economics". When a couple could afford children they chose to begin their family. That is the "choice" that we have forgotten. It's not a Republican or Democratic position - it's a women's right to make the choice and pay her way.

Ruggle,
Yes the law is clear, but like any law if the legislative branch along with the executive branch wants they can create new laws to counter act old laws. Some of the extremists in the Republican party would like those laws to be placed into action. Like you I believe this will not happen, because there is extremes on both sides. Do I believe an abotion should be public funded, no. But with as fractioned as our nation has gotten along political lines, it is becoming more of a reality that an extremist on either sides along with a majority in the Congress could cause that legislation to pass. I understand the fear, but currently do not think it is plausable. Especially with the fight the lobbystist will have against it.

Please remember the Hyde amendment prohibits using federal tax funds for abortions. Military health insurance excludes coverage for abortions. The "No tax money for abortion because I object" whiners won their battle for special privileges in the 1970's. You say: "When a couple could afford children, they chose to begin their family'? In what fantasy world do you live, R-J? Access to family planning information and tools have always, always been opposed by these zealots who force what they believe on every family in the world. And R-J, just how is rape, incest or a medical emergency a "bad choice"? Who taught you biology and ethics: Todd Akin or Mourdoch? Check out the office GOP platform, check out the language of the Blunt amendment co-sponsored by Paul Ryan, then tell us how many months abortion (and contraception!!) will be legal if Romney/Ryan win.

Micael D: I doubt if in the 2 cases you cite, the mother was forced to carry the prenancy to term, as DianeH suggests. Prosecutors actually work for the State, not the victim, to many the victim is just witness. The victim of a rape needs an advocate to help protect her (and any resulting unborn) through the process.

I didn't say she was forcibly carry the child, but they are currently fighting the state to take away the parental rights. You can doubt the cases all you want, your doubt it's affect them and their lawyers fighting the state and their rapist to remove his "parential" rights.

Michael D: The SCOTUS has solved the constitutionality of abortion rights neither the legislative or executive or both are able to change that, only a constitutional amendment would and that is not going to happen. Still, today's issue is can the legislature prevent tax dollars being spent on abortion procedures.
Lynda

R-J, please tell me where you are getting the information that any federal tax dollars are being spent on abortions now.. As I told you above, the Hyde amendment prohibits federal tax dollars from being spent on abortions. Even female soldiers need to pay for their own abortions. And if the current crop of GOP candidates get their way, no exemption for saving the life of the mother, for incest or for rape will be allowed. The SCOTUS is one justice's vote away from replacing Roe v Wade with a decision going back to the 60's when all abortions were outlawed. No need for a constitutional amendment.

Ruggle,
The legislative brach could change it with the executive branch could change it. That is legislation and laws are created. The SCOTUS woud have to support or overturn the new laws creation. All it takes is a few new judges who are favorible to overturn a previous ruling. that is the checks in balances of our government. Now as I said, the legislative branch isn't going to do it, because the lobbyists wouldn't allow it.

Bart Stupak, a Michigan Democrat member of congress, amended the House version of Obamacare to include a version of the "Hyde Amendment" it includes provisions allowing funds in the case of rape, incest or if the mother's life is in danger. The Democratically controlled Senate removed that amendment from the Senate version of the law. On March 24, 2010 President Obama issued an executive order affirming the Hyde Amendment would extend to Obamacare.
The Hyde Amendment provisions apply. mainly, to medicaid patients.
