Severe Thunderstorms Hit Gulfport, the Beaches

The public is being warned of frequent lightning strikes, rip currents and wind gusts.

 

Feeling water logged? The worst of the rain and thunderstorms are not behind us yet.

The National Weather Service reported that at 1:41 p.m. today, a severe thunderstorm with winds up to 60 mph was six miles southwest of Indian Shores. The storm was traveling east, bringing torrents of rain.

A severe thunderstorm warning is in effect for the following areas:

St. Petersburg, Pinellas Park, Gulfport, St. Pete Beach, Kenneth City, Largo, Indian Rocks Beach, Treasure Island, Pass-a-Grille Beach, South Pasadena, Madeira Beach, the St. Pete Clearwater Airport and Boyd Hill Nature Preserve. The warning also is in effect for parts of Tampa and Brandon. The warning extends along Interstate 275 between Exits 6 and 45.

People are being advised to move indoors, because frequent lightning strikes are expected. Rip currents also pose a risk along the beaches.

Rainfall will continue tonight and Wednesday.
