VIDEO: Kayak Adventurer Visits Gulfport

In an effort to raise awareness and discover a new challenge, Daniel Alvarez is kayaking 4,000 miles from Angle Inlet, MN to Key West, FL.

Nature adventurer Daniel Alvarez, originally from Tallahassee, is wrapping up a 2-day stay in Gulfport before heading down the coast on his journey to Key West.

Alvarez is sharing his challenges, triumphs, stories and more on his blog predictablylost.com and will share all of his adventures in person at the Gulfport Public Library tonight at 4:30 p.m.

He has traveled from the Angle Inlet in Minnesota, paddled through the maze of lakes in the Boundary Waters, navigated through Lake Superior, paddled the mighty Mississippi River and, currently is paddling down the Gulf Coast in hopes of bringing awareness to the preservation of our rivers, lakes and oceans.

"I think there are places in the world that need to remain untouched," he said.

On June 11, Alvarez embarked on a new journey with a purpose. Alvarez was awarded a $2,000 grant from Outdoor Magazine for this trip and he received the kayak as a donation. He is donating $500 to four organizations who help protect the waters he is paddling; Friends of the Boundary Waters Wilderness, American Rivers, Gulf Restoration Network and the Florida Wildlife Federation. Learn more about these organizations under "Help Protect the Route" on Alvarez's blog.

He hopes to make it to Key West in March. "I'm gonna get to Key West and eat as much Key Lime pie as possible," he said.

You can follow along on his journey at predictablylost.com. Alvarez has uploaded hundreds of photos on flickr including swimming with the manatees at Crystal River.

Alvarez visited with guests at the Boca Ciega Yacht Club Thursday night. Watch our videos from his presentation to hear more from Alvarez about his journey.
