Gopher Tortoise Rescued, After Dining at Gulfport Cafe

The tortoise, which is a threatened species, wandered on to the property of the Gulfport Cafe, and munched on some leafy greens.

A Gopher Tortoise that was a repeat customer at the Gulfport Cafe was rescued by the owners and handed over to Howell's Angels Wildlife Rehabilitation and Rescue, which is making sure the little guy will be placed in a safe and more natural habitat.

The Gopher Tortoise, a threatened species, somehow wandered on to the premises of Gulfport Cafe, at 5808 28th Ave. South. The owners and staff were delighted to see the reptile, which by the way is the State Tortoise of Florida.

They gave it some leafy Romaine and banana slices, which prompted the Gopher Tortoise to return the next day for more.

This time, the restaurant staff contacted Howell's Angels Wildlife Rehabilitation and Rescue, which knew just what to do.

The Gulfport organization is working to place the tortoise in a more natural environment, where it is not threatened by vehicles and other dangers. Howell's also is following federal protocol for making sure the tortoise, which has federal protections, is safe, according to staff at the Gulfport Cafe.

The folks at Gulfport Cafe were grateful, after being more than a little worried about the intrepid Tortoise.

"A huge THANK YOU to Howells Angels Wildlife Rehabilitation and Rescue for being in the cafe at the right time," wrote the Gulfport Cafe on Facebook.

"They knew the proper protocol and helped our 4 legged guest reach a safe place to hang out ! Kudos to you guys for all you do!!"

Karen Gentner Taddeo responded: "Thanks John and Marie! I hope everyone will check out their website (howellswildliferescue.org) and see what you can do to help them help our wildlife buddies in need!"

"Wonderful!!" Beth Somers replied.
