Free Cancer Screenings Saturday in Gulfport

Stop by Walgreens in Gulfport on Saturday and receive free oral cancer screenings, skin cancer screenings, and prostate screenings. There will also be free food and drinks at the event.

For the past five years free cancer screenings in Gulfport could have potentially saved dozens of lives. Last year alone, organizer David Hastings says they provided free oral cancer screenings to 200 people and referred 16 for further medical attention.

“This is what it’s all about. It’s getting people to have an early detection," Hastings said.

Hastings, an oral cancer survivor, started the screenings to help people detect cancer before it's too late. He has been cancer free for about eight years and says he owes his life to his wife and her persistence in getting him to seek medical help. Hastings discovered a lump in his throat, but didn't have any symptoms or pain before he ultimately was diagnosed with stage four oral cancer. Hastings says screenings like this can save a life.

“It is a proven statistic that the earlier you diagnose cancer, the more treatable it is," Hastings said.

In addition to free oral cancer screenings, the event includes a prostate screening and, new this year, a skin cancer screening by Moffitt.

Skin Cancer Screenings

The Moffitt Cancer Center's Mole Patrol will set up their 40-foot Mobile  Diagnostic Center at the event and offer free skin screenings and cancer education. The Mole Patrol is comprised of medical doctors and midlevel practitioners who specialize in skin cancer and/or dermatology, as well as registered nurses and support staff.

Prostate Screenings

The prostate screening was added just last year. The screening is a simple prostate (PSA) blood test.

The PSA blood test measures the level of PSA in the blood. Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) is a protein produced by cells of the prostate gland.

Donate Blood

Florida Blood Services will have their Blood Mobile set up during the second half of the event. You're encouraged to come out and donate between 12 and 2 p.m.
