Heritage Village shares the legacy of Nelson Poynter

Nelson Poynter (1903-1978) was the longtime editor and publisher of the St. Petersburg Times, presently the Tampa Bay Times. The character of the communities and institutions of which Poynter was a part - some of which he founded and developed - are reflective of Poynter’s lifetime of activism on behalf of causes he believed would protect or improve the lives of Americans.

On Sunday, Oct. 14, Walt E. Gordon will present “Nelson Poynter: His Legacy in the American Century.” The lecture will be held at 2 p.m. in the Pinellas Room of Heritage Village.

Gordon, a graduate student at the University of South Florida St. Petersburg, will discuss Poynter’s contribution to the community as a journalist, concerned citizen and unabashed promoter of St. Petersburg and Pinellas County during the 20th century. The presentation also evaluates Poynter’s civic engagement by shedding light on long-forgotten documents within Poynter’s personal papers and archives located at the Nelson Poynter Memorial Library, University of South Florida St. Petersburg.
