Celebrate National Night Out with the Gulfport Police Department tonight at 6:30 p.m. at the Gulfport Neighborhood Center at 1617 49th St. S.

Sam Smith begins a traffic stop by radioing in the tag number before he stops the car, to see if there are any outstanding warrants.

As Sam and James stop a vehicle, Sam positions the car so that the middle of the police car's grill is slightly left of the back of the stopped vehicle's tailgate. This gives the officer protection during the stop and a good view of the driver in the driver's side mirror.Sam turns the front wheels of the cop car out so that if the police car is hit from behind, the car won't crush the officer. The wheels also make good cover and protection for the officer if things go wrong.

Teens between the ages of 14 and 19 are invited to learn more about local law enforcement. Learn about traffic stops, crime scene investigation and more by joining the Gulfport Police Explorers Post #995.

You may also be able to participate in shooting practice and compete with a Glock 17 semi-automatic handgun. Explorers also participate in weekly meetings, training sessions and community events.
